A polyaspartic floor goes down in a single day. Here is what that day actually looks like, stage by stage.
Your side of the job happens beforehand — emptying the space, clearing access, flagging oil stains. That checklist is in how to prep your garage before coating day. This post covers what the crew does once they arrive.
The Morning: Preparation
Setup and masking. Walls, door tracks, and the driveway apron get protected. Plastic and tape go up around anything that must stay clean.
Diamond grinding. This is the bulk of the labour and the most important part of the day. Commercial grinders with vacuum extraction remove the top layer of concrete, taking sealers, contamination and the smooth trowelled surface with it, and leaving an open profile the coating can bond into.
There will be some dust despite extraction — it is not a clean-room process — but a properly equipped crew keeps it largely contained. If the garage shares a wall with the house, expect a fine film in the immediate area.
Crack and joint detailing. Cracks are routed out and filled with a semi-rigid material. Control joints are treated so the coating does not simply crack where the slab does.
Vacuum and inspection. The slab is vacuumed thoroughly and checked for spots that need more grinding. Any coating applied over dust bonds to dust.
Midday: Base Coat and Flake
Moisture barrier primer. The first coat goes down. This bonds to the concrete and manages vapour transmission from below.
Flake broadcast. While the primer is still wet, flake is thrown by hand across the entire floor until the surface will not accept any more — broadcast to refusal. Crews work quickly here because the window is short. It looks chaotic and it is genuinely a skill.
By the time this stage is done, you will see the color of your floor for the first time. If you picked one of the seven blends, this is the moment it appears.
Cure. Polyaspartic sets in well under an hour rather than overnight. This is what makes a one-day install possible.
Afternoon: Scrape and Top Coat
Scraping. Loose flake that did not embed is scraped off and vacuumed. This creates the smooth surface underfoot — without it the floor stays rough and sharp.
Top coat. The UV-stable polyaspartic wear layer goes over everything, locking the flake in and providing the surface you actually walk and drive on. If you ordered an anti-slip additive, it goes into this coat.
Detailing and cleanup. Masking comes off, edges are checked, equipment is loaded, grinding waste is hauled away.
After the Crew Leaves
Same evening: stay off the floor. It is curing.
Next morning: foot traffic is fine. Walk on it, look at it, put light items back.
After about 24 hours: vehicles can come back.
For the first week: be gentle. Avoid dragging heavy items, and avoid putting rubber mats or cardboard down over the fresh surface — a full chemical cure takes a few more days and trapped solvent under a mat can mark the floor.
Driving on it early is the most common self-inflicted problem we see. A warm tire on a not-quite-cured coating is exactly the stress case described in what causes coatings to delaminate.
A Rough Timeline
Every floor is different, but a standard two-car garage in reasonable condition runs roughly like this:

A three-car garage adds a few hours, mostly in grinding and scraping. A floor with an old coating to remove can add half a day on its own.
What the Crew Is Checking Along the Way
A few things get evaluated as the day progresses, and any of them can prompt a conversation:
Slab condition after grinding. Grinding reveals what is actually under the surface — soft or crumbling areas, previous patches, hidden cracks, oil that has soaked deeper than it looked. Finding these is a feature, not a setback; the alternative is coating over them.
Moisture. If the slab reads wetter than expected, the primer specification may need to change. This is exactly the failure mode described in what causes coatings to delaminate, and it is worth pausing for.
Slab temperature and dew point. Not the air temperature outside — the temperature of the concrete itself, and whether condensation is forming as the space warms. Coatings that go down onto a damp or too-cold slab do not bond.
Recoat windows. Polyaspartic cures fast, which is what allows a single-day install, but it also means each layer has a limited window during which the next one will bond into it. This is why the crew works steadily and does not take long breaks mid-floor.
What Can Change the Schedule
Slab condition. A floor with an old failing coating takes longer to grind. This is why removal is quoted separately.
Temperature and humidity. Slab temperature and dew point determine whether a coating will bond. A crew that postpones because the conditions are wrong is protecting your floor. In winter, an unheated detached garage sometimes needs to warm up before work can start.
Surprises under the old coating. Occasionally grinding reveals concrete in worse shape than it appeared. Better to find out and discuss it than to coat over it.
